FileWash applies RC4 128-bit encryption to your PDF, which is a standard encryption method recognized by all major PDF readers (Adobe Acrobat, Preview, Chrome, Firefox, etc.). When someone opens the protected PDF, they must enter the correct password before they can view the contents.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. FileWash encrypts your PDF entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your document never leaves your device — no data is transmitted over the internet. This makes it safe for confidential, legal, financial, and personal documents.
Can I remove the password later?
Yes, if you know the password. Open the protected PDF in any PDF reader, enter the password, and use "Save As" or "Print to PDF" to create an unprotected copy. FileWash may also add an unlock tool in the future.
What happens if I forget the password?
There is no way to recover a forgotten password. The encryption is real and cannot be bypassed. Make sure to save your password in a secure location like a password manager.
